The Big Myth About Making Money

The Big Myth About Making Money

How are you making your money?

Are you chasing the dollar?

When I started my business in 2013, that is precisely what I did. I chased every client and offered every service, whether or not it was aligned with who I wanted to work with and what I wanted to offer.

To my own detriment, it worked… I got the dollars. I should have been thrilled, right? But I wasn’t.

I was depressed. I was burnt out. I was completely and totally exhausted. I resented the work I was doing, and I dreaded having to do it.

Before I go further, I must admit that there was a plus side to this experience. And that was the actual experience I gained. I worked with everyone from private clients to agencies to large associations. I designed incredible campaigns, secured highly sought-after ad placements, and created nationally-recognized event experiences. I was a one-woman show with a never-ending array of creative tricks and tactics up my sleeve.

It wasn’t until I had a total breakdown, where I realized that what I was doing was no longer fulfilling. From that moment on, I decided that I had to be radically honest with myself about what I wanted and what I didn’t want to do with my life.

It was then that I finally realized that I didn’t want to chase the dollar anymore.

I wanted to chase a vision.

…Which of course includes and requires dollars! But, dollars made the right way.

What is the right way?

It’s simple: doing what you love. You can make money doing what you love.

When you build a business that is aligned with your purpose, your calling, your “soul-power,” you create a foundation that allows you to make money in a way that is aligned with how you are meant to make money. When you build a foundation that is true to you, you can make money in a way that is meant for you.

When you chase your vision, you make money.

The big myth is that you can’t.

Most of us are doing it backwards. We think first we make the money, then we chase our vision and purpose. Once we have x, y, and z, then we can finally lean into what lights us up.

Start with what lights you up. As you light up others through your work, the money will follow.
