Everything has to start with your vision. If I were to ask you what is your vision for 1 year, 2 years or 5 years, would you know?
For the purposes of this blog, we’ll focus on the vision for your business. This vision has to be so clear in your mind that you can painstakingly describe it in the smallest detail. Your vision is more than just a goal or a specific target to achieve something. It answers your why. It gives direction because it’s your desired future. It’s your passion and keeps you excited and motivated. It’s what inspires you to do whatever it is you want to do. Once you have this, you can create goals that are in line with your vision, particularly branding and marketing related goals.
One of the ways that I have focused (and refocused) my vision was through The Desire Map, by Danielle LaPorte. This book includes excerpts and exercises to help you create your vision based on how you want to feel. For many years, I’ve established daily, monthly and annual goals. I’m a list-person, so this process fueled my need for organization. However, I realized that it felt too routine-oriented and didn’t impact my true desires. This book focuses on how you want to feel in various parts of your life, instead of talking about external goals.
In her piece, entitled “The dark side of big goals,” Danielle writes:
“The ego loves big goals like a sugar addict loves sugar. The ego will tell you that the bigger the goals you have, the bigger the person you are.
I should probably tell you now that I’m the kind of person who has very big goals. And if we had tea to jam on your life, and if you had even an iota of ambition, I would probably take that iota and get alchemical with it and blow it sky high. So, I’m the last person to be down on big goals. But I am usually the first person to ask, “So…Why do you want what you want?” Because…
You are not your goals. Your goals don’t dictate your worth.
Why is it helpful to keep this in mind? Because when you can detach your identity and self-worth from the size of your goals, you can see your heart’s vision. It may be wildly ambitious. It might actually be very simple and sweet. (The simple goals often take you the deepest into yourself.) When you know that your soul is the steady power source, and that ambition is for play — you can choose to go big, or go home, and be fulfilled either way.”
This Holiday season, I challenge you to step back and think about your business’ vision, and when developing it, focus on the feelings you want to feel on your path to success!
